Unless your fire hydrant has been hit by a vehicle, blatantly vandalized or terribly neglected, it’s easy to assume that all’s well and fine with it. After all, it stands steadfastly on your property, day in and day out, seemingly well-armored and built to last.
Unfortunately, such a superficial assessment is often unreliable. Because like everything else, a fire hydrant is subject to rust, corrosion and mechanical malfunction from the moment it is installed.
For this reason, fire hydrants throughout our Florida service area are subject to periodic inspection, testing and maintenance by knowledgeable fire protection contractors, such as READY Plumbing & Fire Protection.
Fire hydrant maintenance
READY Fire Protection offers reliable fire hydrant maintenance services to ensure your hydrant’s code compliance and proper functioning in the event of a fire. Ultimately, we offer you peace of mind.
We inspect, test, repair and replace most popular hydrant brands — including Mueller, Clow, U.S. Pipe, Waterous and American Darling, among others.
Fire hydrant inspection, flow tester and backflow preventer services
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) guidelines require that all fire hydrants be inspected annually. READY Fire Protection can help you comply.
Our typical inspection involves freeing a hydrant of any obstruction and properly painting and color-coding it. We lubricate threads, replace caps and check for any leaky valves and gaskets.
We also conduct a hydrant flow test to ascertain the amount of water available for firefighting, as well as the distribution system’s general condition. In instances where a fire hydrant backflow preventer is installed, that device will also be inspected, tested and reported as required by law.

Broken fire hydrant repair
Repairing a fire hydrant is always preferred over replacing it to significantly save on costs. Typically, repair costs come in at between 20 to 40 percent of the cost of a new hydrant.
Besides fire hydrant lubrication, leak repair and painting, READY fire protection contractors will replace fire hydrant parts that may have deteriorated over time from normal wear and tear, as well as adjust the height of your fire hydrant as may be required by changes in the surrounding landscaping or nearby road.
Many fire hydrant repairs can be completed in a relatively short time, between 45 minutes to three hours depending on the hydrant issue, make and model.
Fire hydrant installation and replacement
When needed, READY Fire Protection will remove and then replace an old fire hydrant with a well-designed and reputable new hydrant.
We will improve its underground utility connections before our fire hydrant flow tester runs tests to confirm that the new hydrant meets requisite system pressure levels.
Finally, we will properly color-code the hydrant to indicate that it complies with NFPA 291 and governing local codes.
